South African Rand Stabilizes as Market Anticipates Producer Inflation Data
JOHANNESBURG – In Thursday’s early trading sessions, the South African rand showed minimal changes, holding steady as investors awaited key economic indicators. As of 0615 GMT, the rand was trading at 19.1950 against the U.S. dollar, closely aligned with its previous closing of 19.2100 on Wednesday.
Statistics South Africa is slated to release the Producer Price Index (PPI) for March at around 0930 GMT. Market experts, surveyed by Reuters, anticipate a slight increase in producer inflation, forecasting a rise to 4.6% year-over-year for March, up from 4.5% in February.
The central bank has expressed that steering consumer inflation towards the midpoint of its target range will be a challenging and extended process. Maintaining the main interest rate at 8.25% since May 2023, the South African Reserve Bank continues its efforts to manage inflationary pressures effectively.
